MC44C401EVK is an evaluation and demonstration kit for the Analog Devices Inc. MC44C401 ultra-wideband current-mode controller for boost applications, suitable for off-line power supplies following the International Energy Star (EES) level VI and global CodE of Conduct (CoC) V5. The board provides a cost-effective and rapid platform to evaluate and demonstrate the excellent power conversion performance achievable with the MC44C401, especially regarding standby power. It is ideal for AC/DC power conversion application solutions such as notebook adapter, set-top box, printer adapter, and more.
The MC44C401 is a current-mode switched-mode power supply (SMPS) controller, optimized for power management solutions. This specialized SMPS control IC features an embedded Primary ContArchitecture (PCA) technology. The PCA enables the controller to ramp up in very few cycles, resulting in the lowest possible start-up time and the highest efficiency across the full load range, operating in current-mode architecture without requiring an external slope compensation circuit. Consequently, the system designer benefits from reduced cost and components count, increased system robustness, and reduced design time.
The MC44C401 EVK board includes power component selection, placement, and functionality to optimize the power supply for high performance and low cost. The PCA technology improves efficiency on light and no-load conditions, whereas the primary side regulation technique and the programmable, wide frequency range enhance power over a wide range of load condition. The embedded functions of the MC44C401 allow implementing an efficient, low component count power supply. The EVK allows manipulating the input lines such as Vref, VDD, and EN pin quickly and easily to implement a full range of switching frequency settings.
The MC44C401EVK operates on a 110 VAC single-phase input rating. The board showcases the capabilities of the MC44C401 device and offers features such as frequency range from 50 kHz to 600 kHz, valley current force mode, primary-side current sensing, wide range primary peak current sensing, and peak current limit. It also includes an analog controller with integrated high-voltage (HV) startup, programmable valley current control, maximum power point control, peak current limit, multiple startup thermal protection, LED indicator, capacitive sensing protection, and VDD overvoltage protection. Furthermore, the kit includes design features such as magnetic component selection, placement, and thermal performance.
The kit includes the MC44C401 controller, a DC/DC converter, a MOSFET driver circuit, a current sense circuit, a primary side sensing circuit, an AC/DC rectifier, an EMI filter, and power components. The main functionality of this board is to demonstrate the AC/DC power conversion with a regulated dc output voltage from a household AC power source. The MC44C401EVK also allows users to take full advantage of the low noise, low switching-frequency, and low power loss features of the MC44C401 device, while offering design flexibility to investigate peak current limit, valley current control, and frequency variation.
The MC44C401 EVK board is an ideal design solution for a large variety of applications such as computer peripherals, LCD monitors, set-top boxes, and more, easily adapting to the application’s specific needs.
