The MC74ACT163 is a programmable divide-by-N counter containing four stages of divide-by-two, divide-by-four, or divide-by-eight elements. It is a synchronous, programmable logic device (PLD) that can be programmed to divide an input signal into an output signal. This module can also be programmed to count down from N to zero. It is an industry-standard 4-bit synchronous binary counter package and can be bought from almost all semiconductor manufacturers.The MC74ACT163MEL is designed to be used in applications such as pulse width modulation, signal conditioning, signal processing, and timing. As in the divide-by-two stage, this process is repeated each time an input signal is applied; thus a count of 4 is added in each cycle.The divide-by-eight stage of the MC74ACT163MEL consists of eight logic gates: four OR gates, two AND gates, a NAND gate, and an XNOR gate. The logic gates are connected in an arrangement so that when an input signal is applied to the AND gate, the output of the XNOR gate is complemented. As in the divide-by-two and divide-by-four stages, this process is repeated each time an input signal is applied; thus a count of 8 is added in each cycle.After all the stages of the MC74ACT163MEL are completed, its output signal will have a frequency that is equal to the input signal divided by the N-value (2, 4, or 8).
