Working Principle

The MC78M08CDT is designed as a voltage regulator with a single stage. The input voltage to the regulator is regulated by an internal voltage reference and set by an adjustable resistor connected between the Vref pin and ground. The Vref voltage establishes the output voltage and is monitored by an internal voltage loop allowing for a sensitive and accurate output voltage control over a wide temperature range. A good linearity is ensured by the Bias Modulated Mode (BMM) which minimizes the power supply current variation when the resistance of the ground pad changes. Furthermore, the click-and-go feature allows the voltage regulator to automatically switch between OFF, standby and low current shutdown modes as needed.

The MC78M08CDT is equipped with internal over-voltage, reverse battery and thermal shutdown protection for improved safety and circuit protection. An active low ENABLE pin provides the user with a choice to automatically switch between low power standby mode and full operation mode. This voltage regulator also offers adjustable turn-on and turn-off thresholds which can be programmed via the SENSE pin.
