It features a two-stage design consisting of a PNP output stage and a low-dropout voltage regulator on the secondary side. It is designed to be used in automotive applications, providing regulated output voltages of 1.8V to 5.0V, with adjustable current capabilities up to 1.5A.The MC78M15ABT has a low dropout voltage of 600mV, allowing it to regulate voltages as low as 1.8V. It consists of a P-channel pass transistor and a low dropout voltage regulator. The P-channel pass transistor compromises of a PNP transistor (Q1) and two NPN transistors (Q2 and Q3). The low dropout voltage regulator comprises of an adjustable current source (I4) and an NPN transistor (Q4).The PNP transistor is used to regulate the input and output voltages, while the NPN transistors regulate the current through the pass transistor. When the voltage at the input terminal rises above the reference voltage, Q1 is turned on. This allows current to flow through the pass transistor and output is regulated. When the output voltage changes, the current source adjusts the current through the pass transistor in order to maintain a constant output voltage.The MC78M15ABT offers excellent performance characteristics, with a low dropout voltage of 600mV (typical) and adjustable output current up to 1.5A. It provides short-circuit current limiting, thermal protection and remote on/off. The device is suitable for use in a wide range of automotive, computing and general purpose power supply applications requiring low dropout performance, high output accuracy and remote on/off capability.
