MC78M15ACDTG Application Field and Working Principle

The MC78M15ACDTG Fixed Output Voltage LDO Regulator from ON Semiconductor is an advanced, low power, CMOS linear regulator that can be used for a variety of applications. This voltage regulator consists of a high gain error amplifier, a bandgap reference, a P-channel MOSFET, a current sink, a voltage divider and a voltage amplifier.The MC78M15ACDTG is capable of providing a fixed output voltage up to 15 V and can achieve very low quiescent current. The device is pin compatible with the industry standard TO-220 and SO-8 packages. It also has many features such as a thermal overload protection and short circuit protection that makes it ideal for use in portable applications.The MC78M15ACDTG can be used in a wide range of applications including automotive, industrial, portable electronics and any other application where a low power, low noise and cost-effective linear voltage regulator with a fixed output voltage is needed.

Working Principle

The MC78M15ACDTG operates in a two-stage architecture consisting of a low-power amplifier and a P-channel MOSFET. The first stage of the MC78M15ACDTG is the low-power error amplifier, which is a high-gain amplifier designed to detect any difference between its two inputs. The two inputs are the divided reference voltage and the divided output voltage which is fed back from the output. When the difference among the two input voltages becomes too large, the amplifier will respond and will trigger the output transistors of the regulator to turn on.The next stage of the MC78M15ACDTG is the P-channel MOSFET, which is connected between the output terminal and the ground. As soon as the error amplifier perceives a difference between its two inputs, it will activate the P-channel MOSFET and the current will flow through the MOSFET and it will adjust the output voltage to the desired value. The output voltage will remain constant until the difference between the two inputs is so big that the error amplifier will detect it and trigger the P-channel MOSFET again.

Protection Features

The MC78M15ACDTG also features several protection features that enable it to work in potentially hazardous situations. Thermal overload protection will protect the device from overheating by turning off the MOSFET once the junction temperature reaches an unsafe level.
