MC79L18ACPG Application Field and Working PrincipleMC79L18ACPG is a three-terminal positive voltage regulator designed to provide a regulated output voltage of 1.8V. The device is capable of delivering load currents in excess of 100mA and remains stable with capacitive loads. It may also be used with an external series pass transistor to provide load currents up to several amps. The MC79L18ACPG is a low drop-out (LDO) voltage regulator. The MC79L18ACPG is a linear voltage regulator, used for regulating the output of a power supply. Linear regulators operate by setting a voltage reference and comparing the output voltage of the power supply to the reference voltage. If the voltage drops below the reference voltage, the regulator adjusts the amount of current passing through it to increase the output voltage of the power supply to the reference voltage. The MC79L18ACPG is constructed of two power Mosfets, one n-channel Mosfet and one p-channel Mosfet, connected together in series with a control Node in between. The control Node is connected to the output voltage terminal of the regulator. When the output voltage is below the voltage reference, the control Node will increase the on-time of the p-channel Mosfet and decrease the on-time of the n-channel Mosfet. This decreases the voltage between the source and the drain of the p-channel Mosfet, and increases the voltage between the source and the drain of the n-channel Mosfet. This results in an increase in the output voltage of the power supply. As the output voltage reaches the reference voltage the control Node will adjust the on-time of both Mosfets, so that the output voltage is maintained at the reference voltage.The MC79L18ACPG is used in a wide range of applications where a fixed output voltage is needed, such as mobile phones, computers, and battery-powered devices. It can provide regulated outputs for both positive and negative voltage supplies, and requires very little input current. It is capable of regulating up to 18V in input voltage and provides up to 1A output current.
