The MCP1640BT-I/CHY is a high-efficiency, 1.8 V-to-5 V, synchronous switch-mode voltage regulator optimized for 1.3 MHz operation. This device is a member of Microchip Technology Inc.’s peripheral PWM switch-mode voltage regulator (PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Regulators) family. This device offers an integrated solution that contains an error amplifier, dual-loop control, high-side and low-side power switches, and adjustable current limiting in an 8-pin, wide-body TDFN package. The MCP1640BT-I/CHY device is designed to offer programmable step-down conversion from input supply voltages of 1.8 V to 5 V, with a selectable output range of 0.6 V to 5 V and current operations of up to 350 mA.

Working Principle

The MCP1640BT-I/CHY uses a synchronous, regulated, switch-mode voltage regulation topology to convert a regulated 1.8 V to 5 V input voltage to a regulated 0.6 V to 5 V output voltage. Internal circuitry controls the high-side power NMOS switch in accordance with the voltage present on the output. The internal control algorithm ensures that the output voltage is maintained at the selected level by modulating the on time of the power switch, while ensuring that the peak currents over the limit are not exceeded.

The switching frequency is set to 1.3 MHz and is phase locked to an internal oscillator. A thermally enhanced 8-lead, wide-body TDFN package houses the necessary control, driver and power switches. A separate logic supply allows for microprocessor disabling in standby mode for increased system efficiency. It also provides for precision tracking of the output voltage and improved line regulation.

The MCP1640BT-I/CHY device offers internal over-voltage and over-current protection to protect against load transients or overloads. The device also features integrated current limiting and thermal shut down to protect against excessive device temperatures.
