The peripheral features 16-bit I/O lines organized into two banks of eight lines each. The I/O lines in each bank can be configured as either inputs or outputs and can be individually programmed to simultaneously be inputs or outputs on a port-wide basis. Each I/O line can be individually programmed with an internal pull-up resistors and can be used as inputs for interrupt requests. The device also has two address lines which can be used to select up to four different slave devices, allowing it to be multiplexed in addressable applications.The MCP23016-I/SS is controlled via an SPI interface, which is compatible with the CPUs found in many systems.
