The MCP25050T-E/SL is an I/O expander in the Interface - I/O Expanders family. This device is an integrated I2C bus Transceiver and I2C bus expander with an SPI interface. It serves to expand two I2C bus nodes to four, providing an efficient and cost-effective connection between the system’s I2C bus (host) and its components such as serial EEPROMs, LCDs, and other I2C peripherals (slave).
The MCP25050T-E/SL features four I2C bus pins and two-pin terminals for an SPI interface. This device has built-in circuitry allows the SPI master to communicate with I2C slaves, while still allowing the I2C host to communicate with I2C slaves. It also features up to eight I2C slave addresses, allowing each connected peripheral to be communicatively addressed individually over the I2C bus.
The MCP25050T-E/SL successfully offers multiple degree of integration. First, it supports programmable I2C slave address lines and the I2C bus configuration. Second, the device comes with programmable output drivers, allowing the user to decide how to connect the drivers to the I2C bus. Third, the device also includes a programmable I2C slave clock stops function and a programmable open drain SPI port.
The MCP25050T-E/SL provides a Combined I2C + SPI I2C bus expander solution. It provides the host with an additional I2C master port, allowing the host to establish communication with the I2C slave using the SPI interface. On the bus, it provides an additional I2C slave port, allowing the host to directly connect to the I2C peripheral using the same interface. This device also works with standard 5 V logic levels and can be used with single or dual voltage I2C systems.
For the I2C Master to SPI Slaveinterface, the MCP25050T-E/SL provides a master-slave protocol bridge. The bridge allows the I2C Master to write and read data from the SPI Slave with simple commands from the host. The I2C Master can also issue hardware reset commands, provide bus control for the SPI Slave and receive interrupts from the slave. The device is capable of providing common bus configurations such as Master-Slave, Master-Single Slave, Multimaster and Multislave, with the maximum supported active slaves being seven.
For the I2C Slave to SPI Masterinterface, the MCP25050T-E/SL provides an I2C slave interface and an SPI Master interface. The I2C Slave is accessible to the host either via the I2C interface or the SPI interface. The I2C Slave can be configured to receive or transmit data on read and write requests by the SPI Master or the I2C Host. The SPI Master can also be addressed by the I2C Slave, allowing the I2C Slave to communicate directly with the SPI Master without needing to communicate with the host first.
The MCP25050T-E/SL is extremely versatile in application. It is well-suited for applications that need to add additional nodes to an I2C bus or devices that require communication between multiple peripherals on the same bus. Some typical application fields include serial data transfer and communication, power management, low power devices, remote sensing, and medical instrumentation.
