MCP2510-I/SO is a stand-alone controller designed to be used in system that support the CAN protocol. This controller provides the ability to implement standard CAN communication in a wide variety of applications. Developed by Microchip Technology Inc, MCP2510-I/SO controllers provide an integrated solution of both hardware and software to meet the needs of users requiring simple implementation and relatively small system cost. This allows any user with basic software programming experience to quickly and easily interface MCP2510-I/SO controller with their own customized applications.

The MCP2510-I/SO controller supports the CAN protocol in Standard (2.0A) frames and Includes a compact 8-bit Microcontroller, CAN Protocol Engine, CAN peripheral, Program Memory, I/O Pins and debug interface. It supports up to two transmit objects and two receive objects, with DMA support for efficient data retrieval. MCP2510-I/SO supports cyclic wake-up for low power applications and allows three levels of bus arbitration, i.e. priority, round robin and persistent.

The Microcontroller Unit (MCU) of the MCP2510-I/SO interfaces directly with the CAN message buffer, where it maintains and updates information associated with the message objects, especially the timeouts and arbitration conditions. The MCU can operate in both transmit and receive modes, so stations can be programmed and tested by individual users. Additionally, the MCU provides a low-level instruction set for programming, allowing the user to customize CAN functions.

As a major application, in a vehicle system, an onboard diagnostic system is provided by MCP2510-I/SO controller due to its small size, low cost, higher data speed and low latency.
