Data Acquisition - Digital to Analog Converters (DAC) are electronic devices used to convert a digital signal into an analog signal. The MCP4811-E/P is a single 8-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with an internal voltage reference as well as an external voltage reference option. It is used to interface an 8-bit digital signal from a microcontroller to an analog signal. The MCP4811-E/P is built on a CMOS process, giving it low power consumption, low offset and low noise operation.

Working Principle

The MCP4811-E/P is an 8-bit multiplying digital-to-analog converter (MDAC). It receives an 8-bit digital input code, which is converted to an analog voltage or current output signal. It can operate with an internal voltage reference, an external voltage reference and/or an external current reference, depending on the application. A reference select input (PIN 6) determines whether the internal reference or the external reference is used.

The output of the MDAC is the product of the data value (from the 8-bit input code) and the reference voltage. If the reference voltage is 4V, the output voltage (VOUT) will be 4 times the 8-bit value, 0-255. If the reference voltage is 5V, then the output voltage will be 5 times the 8-bit value.

The MCP4811-E/P has three controls signals - a chip select (CS) signal which is used to enable the device, a clock signal (SCK) which the data is shifted in on, and a data signal (DIN) which is the 8-bit data that is converted to an analog signal. The CS signal must be low while the data is sent in and it must remain low until the conversion is complete.

The MCP4811-E/P also has an optional power-on-reset (POR) that is used to reset the device when power is applied. The POR will reset the device and set the output to 0V.

The MCP4811-E/P has a shutdown pin that can be used to put the device in a low-power consumption mode. When the pin is high, the device is enabled and the output is allowed to operate. When the pin is low, the output is held at 0V, and the device consumes very little power.

The MCP4811-E/P is designed to operate with a wide range of supply voltages, which makes it suitable for use in many different applications. It is available in a variety of package types, including SOIC-8 and DIP-8, making it easy to integrate into a wide range of applications.
