Data Acquisition - Digital to Analog Converters (DAC) have been used for a variety of applications from providing the control signals for motors, amplifiers and other control systems to providing high-resolution analog output for test and measurement systems. The MCP4912-E/P digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is a highly integrated device with features such as a 12-bit serial digital interface, voltage output range, rail-to-rail output, high accuracy and low power consumption.The MCP4912-E/P is a single channel device that operates from either a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply or dual supplies of ±2.7V to ±5.5V. It has two power modes, High Power Mode (3 mA) and Low Power Mode (300 uA). The serial digital data is a 12-bit word, with 8-bits of data, a 4-bits address and a clock input. The output range is from 0V to VS (supply voltage), with a guaranteed 12-bit accuracy.The MCP4912-E/P’s high-level linearity, amplitude resolution and low distortion provide improved overall system noise performance compared to fast PC-based D/A solutions. The device is available in 8-lead PDIP, 8-lead SOIC and 8-lead TSSOP packages and is ideal for a wide range of applications. These include driving audio circuits, such as those used in computer speakers or headphones, as well as driving DC motors, controlling analog devices and providing a digital input to analog transducers.The MCP4912-E/P operates at a maximum analog output current of ±500 μA and features a low-power shutdown mode with minimum current draw of 50 nA. It offers a hardware reset function and more than 50 dB of signal-to-noise ratio. The device also features high settling time for fast response, with a maximum power supply rejection of 65 dB. The resolution of the output is also programmable from 10 to 12 bits.The MCP4912-E/P is a versatile device that can be used in a wide range of applications. To achieve maximum accuracy, the device should be used with a 16-bit or better digital input and ground the non-selected address pins. Channel selection is made through the address pin and an enable signal is provided. An active low device select input can be used to ground the non-selected channels and an active-high enable is provided to enable and disable the DAC output.The MCP4912-E/P utilizes two power modes which allow it to achieve both low power consumption and high performance. In Low Power mode, the device can operate at 3 mA and in High Power mode, it can operate at 300 μA. The device’s power mode and output range are selected through several pins. The output range can be either 0 to 10 volts or 0 to 5 volts and the power mode can be selected through the HPM/LPM pin.In conclusion, the MCP4912-E/P is an ideal choice for digital-to-analog conversion applications where low power consumption and high accuracy are required.
