Thyristors – SCRs
MCR100-4G is one of the thyristor type field-effect devices found in the market. It is a four-layer diode-controlled semiconductor device which is turning on when the current flowing through it reaches the threshold value. This particular thyristor was developed and manufactured by the STMicroelectronics Company.
This particular device has some unique characteristics that are very useful in many electronic applications. First of all, this device is capable of operating at high frequency, which makes it well-suited for a wide range of industrial applications. Secondly, it is relatively inexpensive compared to other types of thyristors, making it cost-effective. Thirdly, it offers adjustable gate characteristics which enable users to easily control the switching on and off of the device. MCR100-4G is mainly used in high-power applications, such as industrial motor starters, AC and DC switching power supplies, and other applications requiring high-speed switching. The working principle of MCR100-4G can be easily understood by understanding the structure of the thyristor. It consists of two P-N junction diodes and two gate inputs, which can be either grounded or open-circuited. When one of the two gate inputs is switched on (normally it will be connected to the positive terminal of the supply voltage), the electrons from an N-type layer start to drift towards the P-type layer. This results in the formation of a P-N junction, which effectively acts as a switch.
Once this junction is formed, current is able to flow through the device. If the other gate input is then switched on (normally it will be connected to the ground terminal of the supply voltage), then electrons start to drift in the opposite direction and the P-N junction is broken. This results in the device switching off.
