The MCT26 optoisolator is a transistor photo-voltaic output designed to isolate circuits from one another. It is a completely self-contained optocoupler consisting of a gallium arsenide infrared LED and a silicon NPN photo-transistor. The MCT26 isolator is suitable for a wide range of applications, including protection between high-voltage and low-voltage electrical circuits, signal isolation in industrial instrumentation, protection in audio equipment and on-board control of a wide range of motor drive systems.

The optoisolator works by using a light-emitting diode (LED) to transmit light to a photo-transistor. The LED is powered by an external dc power supply, which creates the optical energy that is transferred to the photo-transistor through a light conducting medium. This optical energy causes an electrical current to flow through the photo-transistor, completing the circuit. This action results in the creation of an electrostatic field, which isolates the two circuits electrically.
