Optoisolators, also known as optically coupled isolators, are signal transmitters used in electrical applications where high immunity to sensitive external electrical disturbances is needed. The need for optoisolation arises from the emergence of ever smaller and more sensitive digital and analog integrated circuits. The increasing amount of signal coupling occurs in systems utilizing multiple digital or analog signal sources. Optoisolators are designed to constrain all external signals, protect the sensitive devices and keep the electrical potential of the two circuits isolated from each other.
MCT2VM is a type of optoisolator from Vishay Siliconix (a subsidiary of Vishay Intertechnology, Inc.) specifically designed to isolate digital signals. It consists of a photovoltaic (PV) output which is driven by a phototransistor input stage. The MCT2VM optoisolator consists of an LED or infared diode, optically dedicated to a integrated phototransistor stage. Commonly used for signal isolation, it is suitable for data rates up to 20 Kbits/sec and can be used as general purpose relays in industrial, commercial, or consumer applications.
MCT2VM optoisolators application fields vary as multiple circuit isolation, logic isolation, and interfacing between completely and partially isolated systems. The application fields are in industrial control systems and consumer applications. The MCT2VM optoisolator is suitable for logic level interfacing between two independent electronic systems, video and PC monitors, motor controllers, isolated switches and level detectors. It also offers single channel isolation from ground potential and can be used in applications where ground loop problems occur.
MCT2VM optoisolator’s working principle is quite simple. The optoisolator consists of an input LED, emitting an invisible light which irradiates the output transistor, which is connected to the receiving part of the circuit. When the LED is activated, the output signal is generated. The main purpose of optoisolators is to provide electrical isolation between two circuits. This isolation is achieved by using an optical link provided by means of the LED source rather than an electrical connection.
The MCT2VM optoisolator has a power consumption of approximately 4mW and a response time of 19 ns. In addition to that, it has a regulated current from 4mA to 8mA and a forward voltage of 1.9V. Also, it has a maximum current of 5mA, a min. reverse voltage of 5V and an insulation resistance of 100MΩ.
