Working Principle

The MIC2238-J4YML-TR is a switching regulator with an internal power switch operating with a current-mode control loop. It uses an external inductor and capacitors to supply the output voltage. The device includes a 700mV reference voltage, an error amplifier, a voltage regulator, a low-side MOSFET gate driver, and an internal power switch. The device also has an adjustable output voltage, enable input and output voltage sequencing.

The MIC2238-J4YML-TR can be configured either as a buck regulator reducing the input voltage to the output voltage or as a boost regulator increasing the input voltage to the output voltage. In buck mode, the internal power switch turns on when the voltage at the output of the error amplifier is greater than the voltage on the FB pin and the voltage at the gate of the internal power switch. When the input voltage is lower than the output voltage, the power switch turns off when the voltage at the gate of the power switch is less than the FB pin voltage. In boost mode, the power switch turns on when the voltage at the gate of the internal power switch is greater than the FB voltage and the output of the error amplifier is less than the voltage on the FB pin.

The MIC2238-J4YML-TR regulator is designed for low-noise, high-efficiency applications and is optimized for low output voltage ripple, providing a High Precision Output Voltage Accuracy of 3%. The device also has a 200 kHz to 1 MHz switching frequency range, a 2mA quiescent current, and a 95% peak efficiency.

The MIC2238-J4YML-TR is available in an SC-70 (2x2x0.4mm) package. It is suitable for applications such as cellular phones, digital cameras, battery powered equipment, handheld PDAs, and wireless communication systems.
