The MIC2179BSM-TR is a high-performance, low quiescent current, synchronous step-down DC/DC regulator designed to operate from 4.5V to 36V input voltage range. It has a wide 2.5V to 10V output voltage range with current capability up to 3A. The MIC2179BSM-TR features advanced current-mode architecture that provides fast transient response time and a wide output voltage range. Its tiny ODFN-8L package size helps to save board space and is ideal for space constrained applications.The MIC2179BSM-TR operates in a synchronous mode which allows for better efficiency and low quiescent current. The current mode control architecture supports both internal and external compensation options. The MIC2179BSM-TR is a fixed frequency current-mode PWM controller that can be used in wide range of DC-DC applications. The device supports external programmable soft start that can be used to reduce input inrush current. The MIC2179BSM-TR also features frequency hopping which allows changing the switching frequency and spreading switching losses over the entire operating range facilitating better thermal management.The MIC2179BSM-TR supports programmable output current foldback and programmable slew-rate control and enables higher efficiency and better regulation over a wide load range. The device features an internally compensated, programmable loop compensator which improves regulation accuracy and system response time. Furthermore, it’s integrated with Under voltage Lockout and Thermal Shutdown feature that provides protection in case of overvoltage, overtemperature or short circuit conditions.The MIC2179BSM-TR can be used for various applications such as Displays, LED Lighting, Set-top boxes, Audio and Video, Industrial Equipment and other DC/DC applications which require low quiescent current and high efficiency.The working principle of the MIC2179BSM-TR is simple yet effective. The incoming voltage (Vin) is converted into variable voltage by a charging circuit. This variable voltage is then fed to the internal pulse width modulation (PWM) controller which converts the variable voltage into variable frequency. The variable frequency is fed to the internal power switch which controls the on/off cycles of the PWM controller. The PWM controller then sends the variable frequency signal to the output stage, which is in turn regulated to the desired voltage. This voltage is then delivered to the load.The input voltage will vary due to the normal loading requirements, thus resulting in a different output voltage. The MIC2179BSM-TR maintains constant output voltage by dynamically adjusting the duty-cycle (ratio of ‘on’ to ‘off’ times) of the PWM controller. This duty-cycle adjustment is done according to the input voltage and the output voltage.
