The MIC23254-GCYMT-TR is a 3-A, step-down, DC-DC switching regulator designed for reliable and efficient power conversion in a wide range of applications. The devices provide up to 3-A output and up to 95.4% efficiency for advanced portable devices, medical and industrial applications. The device accepts a 4.5-V to 16-V input supply and adjustable output from 0.6 V to 5.5 V.A switching frequency of 3-MHz allows the MIC23254-GCYMT-TR to use tiny, low-cost external components and still obtain excellent transient response. The user can select among Burst Mode® operation, pulse-skipping, and forced continuous operation, these ensure the optimal balance between load transient response and efficiencies.The MIC23254-GCYMT-TR also offers protection against input voltage transients, over-temperature, and ground current surges. Under-voltage lockout, short circuit protection and cycle-by-cycle current limit save the device from potential danger. The device has been rigorously tested using JEDEC-approved environmental test standards.The MIC23254-GCYMT-TR can be used for a wide range of audio, video, computing, automotive and industrial applications where tight regulation, high efficiency, low noise and small size are important considerations.Working PrincipleThe MIC23254-GCYMT-TR is a step-down switching regulator with an integrated N-channel power switch, a P-channel synchronous rectifier, an error amplifier, and a control circuit. The device senses the output voltage and compares it with a user-programmed target voltage. When the sensed output voltage exceeds the target voltage, the device turns on the N-channel switch which regulates the current to the load. At the same time, the P-channel synchronous rectifier allows the output voltage to be regulated more precisely. The integrated feedback circuit amplifies the sensed output voltage, compares it with the target voltage, and adjusts the switching frequency accordingly. This ensures that the output voltage stays close to the desired voltage level even when the load returns to its nominal state. The MIC23254-GCYMT-TR can also be used in a pulse-skipping mode when load transients do not require full response. The device then automatically adjusts the switching frequency to reduce switching losses and improve overall efficiency. In addition, forced continuous operation mode can be enabled in cases where the load is subject to long periods of on-off transients.
