Working Principle

The MIC2586-1YM hot swap controller provides power sequencing and control for boards or systems. The controller gates the power switch to allow current to flow to the load only when the supply voltage has reached a safe limit and when it is within tolerance and the load has been securely engaged. The controller can then respond to overcurrent, undervoltage and overtemperature events by turning the power switch off and indicating these events to the system.

The MIC2586-1YM controller incorporates a hysteretic comparator that monitors the supply voltage and starts the turn-on sequence. While the UVLO (Under Voltage Lock Out) threshold is adjustable, it is typically set to 3.2 V. When the supply voltage rises above the UVLO threshold, the switch is enabled, and the current ramping circuit limits the inrush current. The controller provides a power good signal when the supply voltage is within tolerance. This signal can be used to enable other circuits in the system.

The MIC2586-1YM also includes an overcurrent protection circuit. This circuit monitors the current flowing through the sense resistor and compares it with an adjustable current limit threshold. If the current exceeds the limit, the controller turns off the switch and latches until the reset pin is asserted. This also turns off the power good signal. In addition, a precision current limit function can be used to maintain a constant maximum load current, regardless of line and load variations.

The MIC2586-1YM also includes an overtemperature protection circuit. The external NTC thermistor senses the board temperature and the controller turns off the switch if the temperature exceeds the adjustable overtemperature threshold. The controller can also enable a logic signal, warning the system when the temperature is getting close to the threshold.
