The circuit’s main components are a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and two N-channel MOSFET transistors. The VCO operates at a frequency determined by an external resistor and capacitor connected to the device. The VCO signal switches the two transistors in either the ON or OFF state. The switching transistors connect or disconnect the input power source from the inductor, depending on their ON/OFF state.

The current delivered to the load is regulated by controlling the ON and OFF time of the switching transistors. When the transistors are ON, the current flows through the inductor and charges the load capacitor. When the transistors are turned OFF, the inductor\'s stored energy is delivered to the load. The result is a regulated output voltage.

The MIC2605YML-TR offers several features, including short circuit protection, thermal-shutdown protection, input voltage range of 0.575V to 6.0V, ±1.0% reference voltage accuracy, 270mV dropout voltage and various frequency settings which allow designers to optimize their design. The IC can be configured for the burst mode or continuous output current by setting the ENABLE pin. The device is available in either the PowerSSO-36 or the PowerSO-10 package.
