The MIC26603YJL-EV is an evaluation board that allows users to quickly evaluate the MIC2660 High-Frequency Off-Line Switchers. The board is designed to allow users to measure input and output performance of a wide variety of off-line switching power supplies and up to 20 W system designs, while aiding in the design and evaluation of stand-alone switching power supply solutions. This evaluation board is part of the MIC2660 family of power switchers that combines the latest high-frequency MOSFET technology with mixed-mode control architecture to provide highly efficient and cost effective power solutions. Online buck and boost converters can also be designed with the MIC2660 family using the MIC26603YJL-EV.
The MIC26603YJL-EV is a demonstrator board with complete high-frequency switching regulator functions, including direct PWM control, PFC pre-regulator control, and integrated half-bridge MOSFETs. This board incorporates a Microchip® PIC16F1939 microcontroller to illustrate how to program the MIC2660 power switcher in a stand-alone system. The board also includes a 4-inch color graphical display which allows the user to demonstrate the power switcher’s features, such as soft-start, power good, and fault detection.
The power controlling section of the MIC26603YJL-EV is primarily composed of the MIC2660 high-frequency switching regulator, PIC16F1939 microcontroller and supporting passive components. The MIC2660 is a mixed-mode controller featuring dedicated gate-driver outputs for an internal 600V, 0.55 Ω/phase half-bridge MOSFET and two buck gate-drivers. This allows the MIC2660 to effectively control both the high-frequency power switch as well as multiple secondary buck regulators. The PIC16F1939 microcontroller is provided to demonstrate how the MIC 2660 can be programmed to perform stand-alone switching power supply designs.
The MIC26603YJL-EV evaluation board is designed to provide a high-frequency switching power supply with a total power output of up to 20 W. It has robust load-transformer regulation that enables maximum efficiency while providing an output voltage ranging from 4 V to 19.2 V. Additionally, it enables system designers to easily tailor a wide range of power requirements with its programmable over-voltage and over-current protection, along with input differential voltage monitoring. The PFC pre-regulator boosts the input rectified line voltage up to the peak voltage level before the input capacitor, allowing high utilization of the available power. The PFC pre-regulator provides an input current mode boost control with skip cycle and run/restart modes, allowing operation of multiple switching stages with variable load conditions.
The MIC26603YJL-EV is well suited for a wide variety of applications such as AC/DC power supplies, LED lighting, and industrial or communications systems. It has a wide input voltage range that allows it to operate with input ranging from 90 VAC to 265 VAC, while its maximum output power of 20 W provides ample power for smaller applications. The switching frequency of the MIC26603YJL-EV can be programmed up to 500 kHz, offering improved system efficiency, reduced EMI, and low power consumption.
