MIC37102YM is a high-performance low-dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator. This device integrates a voltage reference, power MOSFET and control circuitry in a small surface-mount SOT23-5 package and guarantees a minimum of 1.0 A output current. It also offers excellent load regulation, ground pin current, and line transient response performance for low-noise microprocessor-based systems. Furthermore, this device offers wide input and output voltage ranges, and it is able to operate with a minimum 1.5V input and a maximum 5.5V output voltage range.
The MIC37102YM is suited for use in a variety of applications such as cell phones, PDAs, networking and communications systems. In addition, this device can also be used in applications requiring low-power and low-voltage DC/DC modules on system boards. Furthermore, it can be used as an excellent alternative to traditional discrete linear regulators due to its superior features, such as lower quiescent current and smaller footprints.
Working Principle
The MIC37102YM follows the same principle as other linear regulators. It receives high supply voltage from an input power source and converts it into a lower, more stable voltage at its output. This is accomplished by implementing a voltage-divider circuit between the input and output comprising of a series combination of a resistor and a transistor. The transistor is typically an N-type field effect transistor (FET) or an N-channel MOSFET, both of which act as voltage dividers when placed in series with a resistor. The transistor acts like a “switch” that is either partially closed or fully opened depending on the input voltage. When the input voltage is below a certain threshold voltage, the transistor is “closed” and no current is allowed to flow between the input and output, effectively maintaining a low output voltage.
The MIC37102YM also includes a voltage reference and error amplifier that allows the device to maintain a more precise output voltage. This is accomplished by taking a small reference voltage off of the output and comparing it to the desired output voltage. If the desired output voltage is greater than the actual output voltage, the error amplifier will increase the duty cycle of the transistor until the desired output voltage is achieved.
In summary, the MIC37102YM uses a voltage-divider circuit in combination with a voltage reference and error amplifier to regulate an output voltage from an input voltage.
