The MIC5156BM is an adjustable precision low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator controller. This product is offered in an ultra small, thermally enhanced 8-pin DFN package. The MIC5156BM series of LDO controllers offers a wide adjustable voltage range from 0.75V to 7V for fixed or variable output applications and features an ultra low dropout voltage of typically 200mV.
With low quiescent current of only 3.5mA, the MIC5156BM series of LDO controllers is designed to provide precision power supply regulation in various applications including mobile computing, handheld communication, multimedia, general industrial and consumer applications.
The MIC5156BM low-dropout regulator offers a wide range of protection features, including output short-circuit, over-current, over-temperature, open drain and active-high/active-low enable control. With these features, the MIC5156BM series is well-suited for power supply design incorporating a PMIC (power management integrated circuit) and system-on-chip (SoC) applications.
The principles of the MIC5156BM LDO linear regulator controller are built around the features of low voltage, low dropout (LDO) regulator series, which offers a wide voltage range from 0.75V to 7V. This controller includes an adjustable precision bandgap reference, a wide bandwidth, low power comparator, and an exceptionally low on-chip feedback resistor.
The operation principle of the MIC5156BM is based on the varying voltage across the two voltage dividers, Figure 1 shows the block diagram which explains how the external components and the enable control pin (EN) contribute to the voltage regulator circuit of the device. The load current passing through the sensing resistor R1 is compared to the reference voltage. In the case of load current increasing, the voltage across R1 increases more and the output voltage is returned to reference voltage level. This is the operation of the current sense amplifier of the MIC5156BM.
The current sense amplifier output is connected to the feedback control circuit. The feedback control circuit modulates the pass transistor current to maintain the output voltage at the level of the reference voltage which is ensured by the supply voltage of 3.3 V. The MIC5156BM LDO controller also features an open drain (OD) and active low or active high enable control (EN) to enable the output voltage to be turned on/off without needing to disconnect the power supply.
Once the supply voltage is present and the enable pin is active, the internal oscillator begins to periodically activate the high side pass transistor and discharge the output capacitor. This action occurs every 400 ms to reduce output voltage droop due to output capacitance. All of the mentioned features enable high accuracy supply voltage for precise, high performance, low power applications.
The MIC5156BM is designed with system level protection and power tracking options. These features enable precise output voltage and eliminate system inefficiency caused by high quiescent current. The current limit protection is included in the design of the MIC5156BM, so that the output voltage is daisy chained while still able to protect the load against short circuit or circuit overload conditions. The thermal shutdown protection ensures that the MIC5156BM can fight against the strong temperature variation of extreme environments which may result in wrong operating parameters in the system.
