The MIC5156 is a high-performance, low-power linear regulator controller, designed to provide constant-voltage and constant-current regulation in applications demanding very low dropout voltage and high accuracy. The MIC5156 has a wide input voltage range and is capable of generating an adjustable output voltage up to 5.5 V with a high precision reference and current limit capability. It is easily configurable with external components to provide a low-dropout regulator with low quiescent current, line and load regulation, and over-current and over-temperature protection. This design consists of an error amplifier, a current source, and a resistor divider.
The MIC5156 provides a comprehensive current-monitoring and voltage-regulation function. The device monitors output voltage and current, and adjusts the output in order to maintain a constant output voltage and current. The current-sense output line allows the MIC5156 to monitor the current pass through the load, and the voltage-sense line allows the device to monitor the output voltage. The MIC5156 then adjusts the output current so that the load current is maintained within the current-limit window, while the output voltage is kept constant.
When placed in the application circuit, the MIC5156 uses an external current source to source or sink current to the load, based on the sensed load current and output voltage.
