MIC5157YM Application Field and Working Principle
The MIC5157YM is a linear regulator controller IC belonging to the family of Programmable Multiphase Interleaved (PMIC) power management ICs from Micrel. It is designed to provide efficient, cost-effective and compact voltage regulator solutions.

Working Principle
The MIC5157YM operates by manipulating the duty cycle of internal high-side MOSFETs, as well as low-side MOSFETs, to regulate the output voltage. It works in conjunction with external level-shift circuitry to provide switching across the multiple power channels.
During active operation, the IC constantly measures the input voltage, the current and the output voltage, and then modulates the duty cycle of its MOSFETs to adjust the output voltage level. If the output voltage is exceeding the set value, the active MOSFETs are switched off and the linear regulator is enabled, ensuring the correct output voltage. If the output voltage is too low, the MOSFETs are enabled and the linear regulator is disabled for a short period of time until the desired output voltage value is reached, after which the linear regulator is re-activated.
The schematic of the MIC5157YM is shown below and illustrates the voltage regulator’s basic components—a power MOSFET, an error amplifier, a reference voltage source and a driving circuit. The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage from the output of the regulator transistor and the reference voltage source, and reduces the difference between these two voltages.
