The MIC5158BM-TR is a high-performance, feature-rich linear voltage regulator controller. It is designed to provide excellent line and load regulation while providing the system designer with advanced features such as ultra-low noise output voltage and fast transient response. The device also includes a wide range of built-in protection features that provide system robustness and high reliability for today’s demanding applications.The MIC5158BM-TR is suitable for power supplies used in a variety of industrial, networking, server, notebook, and consumer applications. It is designed to provide excellent line and load regulation while providing the system designer with advanced features such as ultra-low noise output voltage and fast transient response. The MIC5158BM-TR regulates positive and negative supply voltage rails down to 0.8V and up to 10V. It is also a good choice for point-of-load regulators and low power battery applications.The MIC5158BM-TR offers a tweakable output voltage for the voltage regulator, allowing for fine tuning to the exact output voltage required. The device can be configured for either a fixed or adjustable output voltage in either a Linear or Step-Down switching mode operation. With the adjustable voltage, the voltage output can be adjusted between 0.8V and 10V in increments as small as 49.33mV. The device also includes many other features, such as over-temperature, over-voltage and over-current protection, which enable robust and reliable operation.The working principle of the MIC5158BM-TR begins with a low-side switch connected to the incoming voltage. This switch is driven by a control signal which is in turn generated by the voltage regulator. This control signal is generated using the error amplifier, error comparator, sawtooth oscillator, and N-channel MOSFET switch, which taken together form the linear voltage regulator.The voltage regulator will first compare the reference voltage against the feedback voltage, generated by measuring the output voltage of the supply. If the two are not equal it will regulate the voltage on the low-side switch, allowing current to pass through the switch and thereby increasing or decreasing the output voltage of the supply. If the reference and feedback voltages are equal the low-side switch will be turned off in order to prevent any excessive increase in current or decrease in voltage.The MIC5158BM-TR also includes a wide range of built-in protection features and robustness monitors which provide system robustness and high-reliability for today’s demanding applications. These include protection against inrush current, over voltage conditions and over-temperature protection. The device also includes a soft start, adjustable current limit and PSF module.The MIC5158BM-TR is a high-performance, feature-rich linear voltage regulator controller, offering excellent line and load regulation, ultra-low noise output voltage, fast transient response, integrated monitoring and protection features and robust system robustness. It is suitable for a variety of industrial, networking, server, notebook and consumer applications, and provides adjustable, tweakable output voltage ranging from 0.8V to 10V.
