The MIC5158YN is a high speed and high performance voltage regulator controller. It is designed to increase current capability and efficiency of buck regulator power supplies. At the heart of the regulator are two on-chip mosfets, connected in parallel and their gate drive circuits. The input voltage is sensed by an internal voltage divider, fed to a high accuracy comparator. This comparator indicates when the input voltage is greater than the preset output voltage, turning ON the upper mosfet and turning OFF the lower mosfet, thus maintaining the output voltage. The amount of current being sourced from the input is continuously monitored, providing an accurate indication of the output voltage error. If the output voltage is too high, switching the lower mosfet off and the upper mosfet on, causing the output voltage to be reduced.The MIC5158YN includes an on-chip oscillator that sets the nominal switching frequency. The oscillator frequency can be adjusted by an external capacitor. It also includes an on-chip error amplifier that constantly monitors the output voltage, using a voltage divider connected to the output. The error amplifier provides a voltage proportional to the output voltage that is compared to the internal reference to adjust the oscillator frequency. The frequency adjustment ensures that the current drawn from the input always equals the output current, and that both the output voltage and efficiency are maintained.The MIC5158YN also includes built-in safety features to protect the device against over-voltage, over-current and thermal shutdown conditions, thus ensuring long life and reliable operation in any application. For example, the output voltage of the regulator is monitored by an internal feedback circuit, providing an over-voltage protection. If the output voltage is greater than the preset value, the IC will interrupt the power supply, shutting down the output, thus protecting the system from an over-voltage condition. Similarly, the MIC5158YN also includes an over-current protection circuit, which will detect a short circuit at the output, shutting down the regulator before any damage is done.Finally, the MIC5158YN includes an on-chip thermal shutdown circuit that protects the device from overheating conditions. The thermal protection circuit monitors the device\'s internal temperature and automatically shuts down the system in case of excessive heat.
