The MIC5206-3.3YMM-TR is a cost-effective voltage regulator that helps system designers reduce design time, space and cost. Working Principle

This voltage regulator is based on Buck (DC-DC) architecture, which is the simplest, generated from a given input voltage, a lower voltage from the available supply as regulated output voltage. The given input voltage is applied across two series resistors, one of which is adjustable, that sets the output voltage. A precision bandgap reference voltage is also applied to one of the resistors. The current through the adjustable resistor creates the feedback which takes the form of a three-stage error amplifier, and current limiting is accomplished with the use of an NPN transistor.

The regulator uses a series pass topology form the feedback network to regulate the output voltage. The series pass element is controlled by a gated driver, which is driven by the error amplifier. To maintain a regulated output voltage, the gated driver adjusts the duty cycle of the pass element. This duty cycle adjustment is based on the input/output regulation loop formed by the error amplifier, the gated driver, and the series pass element.
