The first stage is the reference stage, which comprises of a bandgap reference, a transconductance amplifier and an error amplifier. The bandgap reference provides a constant voltage reference and the transconductance amplifier amplifies any voltage difference between the feedback and the reference voltage. The error amplifier compares the output of the transconductance amplifier to the external feed–back volta ge and produces an error signal which drives the pass transistor\'s gate. The next stage is the pass transistor stage, which consists of the pass transistor, a current lim iting resistor, and a compensation capacitor which stabilizes the pass transistor’s operating point. The pass transistor acts as a switch to control the voltage applied to the output.The last stage is the output stage, which consists of the output capacitor and the output diode. The output capacitor is used to reduce any output voltage ripple and the output diode is used in a reverse configuration to protect the output against very high current load transients. The output capacitor also helps to improve transient response and provides output power filtering.
