MIKROE-2300 application field and working principle
The MIKROE-2300 is an Evaluation Board from the family of Expansion Boards, Daughter Cards from MikroElektronika. It serves as a M.2 (NGFF) socket to the user or development team. It opens up an array of applications for the end user and developer, as it allows them to connect to a wide range of devices, further enabling them to use the board in a wide range of applications.
The board is designed around the M.2 (NGFF) socket, allowing it to house specific type of cards, such as M.2 NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) cards. This allows users to connect the board to a wide range of compatible devices, such as memory storage, wireless communications, peripheral, audio and video, and USB in addition to the several other devices that it can be employed for.
The board is composed of several components, an illuminated M.2 connector with an L-shaped insert. These components are complemented by additional components such as a USB-UART converter, enabling the board to be integrated into existing systems. The board is also populated with user-friendly control buttons, making it easy to operate and understand.
In order to benefit from the capabilities of the board, users should first understand its underlying working principles. The board primarily works by converting the data from one format to another. At the top-level, the M.2 connector accepts and processes the client’s data for further gateways, allowing the data to be transferred to its destination.
The M.2 connector works by communicating with the client device, for example, the memory storage device or the wireless communication device. All the data then goes through the microcontroller, namely, the K20DX128VLQ100 microcontroller from NXP. This microcontroller is clocked up to 80 MHz, and runs from a supply of 3.3V.
The microcontroller is responsible for the decoding and encoding of messages, which then come to the LED. Additionally, the microcontroller is also responsible for the USB interface, as it supports the upload of files and the status of the board.
The USB UART driver, easily integrated using the microcontroller, allows the control board to be connected to a personal computer or laptop, allowing it to be programmed, operated and data extraction. Additionally, the board also has two status LEDs, which indicate the board’s power status and the status LED to provide feedback.
The board is the perfect tool for a wide range of application fields, such as development, storage, communications, audio, video, and USB. Each field has its own requirements for the application, allowing users to have the necessary tools required to develop their own projects.
These range from testing and verifying the electrical and mechanical properties of a system, to the evaluation and characterisation of the system. These include the testing and evaluation of system components and assemblies, such as the correct connections of the board, the power supply and the correct design of the PCB.
The board is also tailored to meet unique requirements of each specific application. Examples include the M.2 connection with external hardware and testing of radio frequency communications. Hence, the board is a versatile and reliable evaluation platform.
