The MK2304S-1LFT is an integrated, ultralow-jitter clock generator solution that supports single- or differential-ended 24-pinSSOP with pad and Toggle PadTM packages as well as operating temperature ranges from -40 to 125 °C. This device integrates a high-performance fractional-N synthesizer along with an on-chip VCXO, offering a wide range of flexibilities such as fast locking, high phase jitter and negligible startup time.

The MK2304S-1LFT is classified as a clock generator or frequency synthesizer device and is most commonly found in medium and large-scale communications systems such as 5G Cellular Technology Base Station, CMTS, GPS and Fixed Wireless Access Systems, Ethernet Switches, Set Top Boxes and more.

The MK2304S-1LFT is capable of operating at a wide frequency range of 200 kHz to 1600MHz, with an output frequency range of 6 MHz to 1023 MHz. The device has an adjustable output voltage level of 0.0 to 3.3V, with an adjustment range of +10/-20 dBm that can be programmed through a no-latency I2C interface.

The working principle of the MK2304S-1LFT is based on a fractional-N frequency synthesizer, combined with a Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillator (VCXO) for dynamic frequency control and phase jitter reduction. The fractional-N portion of the device operates on a predetermined divider ratio, based on a user-programmable reference clock frequency. The output frequency of the synthesizer is a result of the multiplication of the reference frequency and the fractional-N ratio.

The VCXO offers the necessary flexibility to control the output frequency based on dynamic user inputs. The VCXO portion consists of a tuned mechanical oscillator with no moving parts, making it highly stable and less prone to electromagnetic interference. The precision clock output of the MK2304S-1LFT is generated by combining the output of the fractional-N synthesizer with the VCXO output and synchronizing them to the cycle of another clock. The resultant clock output is adjusted and precisely tuned to meet the desired frequency.

The MK2304S-1LFT presents two distinct modes of operation – micro-adjustment mode and selectable output frequency mode. In the former mode, ultra-fine tuning of the synthesized frequency is enabled by directly programming the amplitude and voltage of the VCXO. The selectable-output-frequency mode allows the user to program a pre-determined frequency from the device’s internal bank of pre-stored frequency scales.

The MK2304S-1LFT also boasts a built-in VCXO-based low-jitter clock generator which offers an output jitter value of less than one-third of a unit interval at 1Gbps data rate. Additional features of the device include an input reference crystal oscillator, an on-chip 8-bit DAC, a TTL-level chip enable and a start/stop input, making it a perfect solution for modern systems that demand both low power consumption and low jitter.
