The MM74C157N is a dual 4-bit multiplexer/demultiplexer integrated circuit (IC) designed to select or demultiplex binary data streams. It is made up of two independent 4-bit multiplexers/demultiplexers, each with four data lines, an enable line, and four select lines. The primary application for the MM74C157N is as a register file, where data can be shifted from one location to another and from one set of registers to another. Additionally, the MM74C157N can be used to select, demultiplex, multiplex and control access to a data bus.

The MM74C157N has two groups of select lines, A and B. Each select line is used for one of the four multiplexers/demultiplexers. A0, A1 and A2 select lines are used for the upper four multiplexers/demultiplexers while, B0, B1 and B2 are used for the lower four multiplexers/demultiplexers. When enabled, the MM74C157N will output the value of the input connected to the selected output. When disabled, the MM74C157N will output a logic ‘0’.

The MM74C157N is also equipped with an Enable pin for each multiplexer/demultiplexer bank. When enabled, the corresponding multiplexer/demultiplexer bank operates according to the values of the select lines. When disabled, the output of the corresponding bank goes low. This can be used, for example, to control the output of a device that requires data from multiple sources, such as a RAM chip.

The MM74C157N is enabled and disabled using the chip’s ‘Enable’ pin. If the ‘Enable’ pin is low, the multiplexer/demultiplexer bank is disabled. When the ‘Enable’ pin is high, the corresponding multiplexer/demultiplexer bank is enabled. The values of the select lines then determine which input is connected to the output. The ‘Enable’ pin also has a ‘not enables’ contraindication which can be used to invert its state.

In order to provide flexibility within applications, the MM74C157N is also capable of supporting both active high and active low select lines. This can be done by setting the pin normally associated with an active select line to be an active low line, which negates the logic level presented to the multiplexer/demultiplexer. For example, a binary counter outputting a count of ‘1001’ could activate an active high B0 line, but with active low setting the B0 line would be low. In addition, with the active low setting, the MM74C157N can operate in ‘negate’ mode serial input and output combinations.

The MM74C157N is used in many applications where a quick logical selection or multiplexing of data is needed. For example, it can be used in bus selection, address multiplexing, arithmetic circuitry, data buffering, register addressing and memory addressing systems. It is also used in logic expression evaluation, robotic and remote control systems, communication interface systems, and more.
