The sensing principle of the MMA2301D is called capacitive micro-electro-mechanical integrated technology (CMEMS). It uses a comb-like capacitive micro-electro-mechanical system (CMEMS) to measure the change in capacitance when the two masses move relative to each other. This change in capacitance is measured and translated into an output voltage proportional to the acceleration value.

The MMA2301D accelerometer features several important output characteristics, such as sensitivity, offset voltage, and bandwidth. The sensitivity is adjustable and can be set to a range from 0.5µV/g to 3.75µV/g. The offset voltage is the voltage output when no acceleration is applied to the sensor. This helps to ensure accuracy in the zero-g position. The bandwidth is adjustable, with the widest range being 5-2000Hz.
