Working Principle
When a voltage is applied to the inputs of the MOC8100SM, the LED emits a light that is detected by the phototransistor. This causes a current to flow in the collector-emitter circuit of the phototransistor that reflects the switch state of the circuit. The MOC8100SM can detect small changes in light intensity and has a high speed response of 14 microseconds. This response is important when controlling systems that require fast reactions and responses.
The MOC8100SM is designed to operate in normal mode where the LED and phototransistor both remain on all the time. In this mode, the LED is usually used as the input to the device, and the phototransistor is the output. If the light emitted from the LED is removed from the phototransistor, then the output of the phototransistor will become low. This will cause the output to switch off. The device can also operate in a latching configuration where the LED and phototransistor can be switched on and off independently. In this configuration, the LED is used as the input and the phototransistor is used as the output.
