MP2420AGF is a DC-DC switching regulator that belongs to the family of PMIC (Power Management IC) voltage regulators. It is designed to deliver a regulated output voltage in a wide range of input/outputvoltage and/or load conditions. The MP2420AGF is a synchronous fixed-frequency current-mode step-up DC/DC converter featuring high efficiency, low noise and low current consumption. Working Principle:

The MP2420AGF operates in current-mode, i.e., it behaves as a current source. During the switching cycle, when the PWM signal is high, the external MOSFET will be turned on and the inductor current will rapidly build up. When the PWM signal goes low, the MOSFET is turned off, and the inductor current will be transferred to the output capacitor via the synchronous rectifiers. During this flow, the voltage drop across the inductor appears across the output capacitor and the output voltage is thus offset. This switching cycle is repeated and the output voltage is regulated by adjusting the inductor current.

The MP2420AGF has a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) frequency of 800kHz, which appears as a “square wave” in the circuit. This square wave is generated by the internal voltage reference (VREF) and the internal Current Sense Amplifier (CSA). The CSA senses the inductor current through an external resistor and compares it with the voltage reference. The error signal is then processed by the control loop circuitry, which adjusts the inductor current to ensure output voltage regulation. The output capacitor is used to filter the ripple generated by the regulation process.

The MP2420AGF features a programmable soft-start function that can be enabled by setting the soft-start pin to “1”. This allows for easy control of the output voltage during start-up and reduces stress on the components by ramping up the voltage slowly. The device can also operate in CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode) or DCM (Discontinuous Conduction Mode) depending on the soft-start time and the cycle-by-cycle peak current limit.
