MP3394SGY-Z Working Principle

The MP3394SGY-Z is based on a synchronous buck topology powered by an external PMOS FET. The device operates in a 900 kHz to 1200 kHz voltage converter frequency range. This enables it to provide high efficiency power conversion and low EMI (electromagnetic interference).

Initially, the chip’s two MOSFETs establish the required output voltage level. The chip then uses a proprietary current mode control with adaptive ON time to regulate the output current. This output current is then regulated by the on-chip reference voltage that is independent of the input voltage and load current.

Once the output voltage and current are set, the chip then drives the external PMOS FET. The FET then switches on and off to achieve the current limit. When the FET is on, it sources current from the input voltage, and when it is off, it sinks the input current to ensure no unnecessary energy is dissipated.

Finally, the chip features a built-in soft-start function and frequency fold-back mode. The soft-start function reduces inrush current at startup, while the frequency fold-back mode helps it to avoid over-current and thermal issues.
