The MPLAD30KP180A is a low-capacitance substrate diode which is part ofthe TVS-Diodes family. It provides the highest ESD protection forhigh-speed data lines against electrostatic discharges (ESD), and isdesigned for oversampling systems and for cellular andmulti-media applications. This is achieved by using a unique "junction ofa diode and a field plate" structure, with low capacitance and lowclamping voltage.

The MPLAD30KP180A is specified to protect up to 4 data lines, with atotal peak pulse current of 30A. It is commonly used in the protectionof data interfaces like USB2.0/3.0, DisplayPort, HDMI, SATA, UART, etc.It has a ESD protection rating of IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4, up to ± 30kV.

The working principle of the MPLAD30KP180A is as follows: When theESD strikes the device, the metal field plate is quickly discharged anda strong electrostatic field is built up around the junction. Thisfield then captures the energy from the ESD and dissipates it to thebottom and side surfaces of the package, so that the protected device(such as a HDMI port) is not damaged by the ESD. The device alsoincludes an integrated ESD protection diode to absorb any additionalenergy that may be present.

The peak pulse current for the MPLAD30KP180A is limited to ±30A, andthe clamping voltage is specified to be 7V. The device is built usingBUMOS technology, which has a low on-voltage drop and very lowreverse leakage current.
