MPQ8632DGLE-12-Z (MPQ8632) is a high resolution monolithic high efficiency synchronous step-down regulator with a wide input voltage range, suitable for portable device power applications. This DC/DC converter contains an integrated control circuit, high-side power switches, two independent regulated output channels, and a built-in soft-start circuit. A wide input voltage range of 4.5 V to 28 V allows MPQ8632 to be employed in many applications ranging from lithium-ion battery systems to 12 V industrial power supplies.

The output voltage range of MPQ8632 is 0.6 V to 3.3 V, and the switching frequency can be programmed between 300 kHz and 2.2 MHz. With the adjustable output voltage and frequency, the MPQ8632 can easily be configured using a customized external loop compensation network to meet the design requirements. The high efficiency of the MPQ8632 can be maximized by continuously adjusting the output current level and by controlling the operating mode of the converter, making it a highly desirable solution for many application scenarios.

Application Field

The MPQ8632 is widely used in a variety of different power applications, including small form factor point-of-load (POL) systems, automotive, industrial and communications applications. In small form factor POL systems, the MPQ8632 is well suited due to its high efficiency, low profile SOIC package, and wide input voltage range (4.5 V – 28 V). In automotive applications, the MPQ8632 is used to adjust the output voltage in 12 V to 14.4 V power systems, as well as in 42 V systems. In industrial applications, the MPQ8632 is ideal as an energy optimized variable power supply for basic power supplies, adjustable power supplies and programmable power supplies. In communications applications, the MPQ8632 can be used for powering up digital components in a power system.

Working Principle

MPQ8632 operates in a synchronous Buck converter topology and uses an external pair of N-channel MOSFETs for power stage control. The MPQ8632 synchronizes the switching of the internal power switch and the external FETs by synchronizing the clock with an external clock. The output voltage of MPQ8632 is adjustable and can be set by the external resistor feedback network. The operating mode of the circuit can be changed by controlling the duty cycle of the clock waveform. When the duty cycle is adjusted, the internal power switch is switched off, and the circuit operates in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). When the duty cycle is close to 100%, the internal power switch is kept on, and the circuit operates in continuous conduction mode (CCM).

The MPQ8632 also contains a soft start circuit that is used to limit the inrush current of the output, thus avoiding possible damage to the system. The soft start circuit is controlled by an integrated voltage regulator loop (VRL) circuit. The VRL circuit is designed to regulate the charge and discharge of an external capacitor connected to the soft start pin, thus controlling the soft start rate of the circuit. Additionally, the MPQ8632 can be operated in both power save mode and power save plus mode. The power save mode ensures that the output voltage is maintained even when the input voltage drops. On the other hand, the power save plus mode ensures that when the input voltage drops, the switching frequency is reduced to maintain higher efficiency.

By combining an adjustable output voltage, adjustable switching frequency, and an integrated soft start circuit, the MPQ8632 is an ideal solution for a variety of applications requiring a high efficiency, low profile synchronous switching regulator.
