Inrush Current Limiters (ICLs) are devices that are used to limit the initial peak or surge of load or circuit current when power is first applied, during transmission line switching or circuit breaker interaction. The MS32 15012 Application Field and Working Principle is one such example of this device.
The MS32 15012 is a low profile, single phase inrush current limiter with adjustable current limiting capabilities, rising time control, dual mounting styles and wide ambient temperature range. The primary application of this ICL is in isolation transformer protection and inrush current protection of other electronic circuits.
The working principle of the MS32 15012 is based upon a temperature and magnetic compensation core which is used to limit the inrush current when an isolation transformer is engaged. The core is triggered when power is applied to the primary of the isolation transformer. At this point, the core produces a voltage across the secondary of the transformer which is proportional to the inrush current.
The core then stores energy until the peak of the inrush current is reached. Then, the energy stored in the core is instantaneously dissipated, thereby limiting the inrush current. This process is repeated at intervals at which the inrush current is always limited to the specified value.
The MS32 15012 has adjustable settings for both the peak current that it limits and the rise time of the current. The adjustable settings are set according to the application needs. The device has a temperature compensation element that helps control the temperature stability of the device.
The MS32 15012 can be mounted in multiple configurations, allowing it to suit different installation requirements. The device also has a wide operational temperature range, which makes it suitable for use in harsh environmental applications.
The MS32 15012 ICL has the unique capability to sense incoming surges, identify any abnormalities, and compensate immediately to keep the voltage and current levels piked at the set limits.
