Electric appliances, especially those used in homes and factories, are constantly exposed to transients that can cause disruption in power supply. TVS diodes are designed to prevent such disruption from occurring by absorbing, suppressing, and diverting such transients before they reach the appliances. The MSMLG14AE3 is a TVS device specifically designed to satisfy the demand for a high-temperature, low-capacitance, and low-reverse-leakage diode. It offers high surge and ESD protection, as well as low capacitance levels for low EMI/RFI emissions. Using the Zener-diode-pair design, the device can deliver performance levels such as high surge current capability reaching at least 5A, very low capacitance down to 3pF (at 1MHz), and low reverse leakage current under 1uA. It should also be noted that the MSMLG14AE3 offers an excellent thermal stability after clamping. All of these advantages make the MSMLG14AE3 an ideal choice for a wide variety of power-supply and signal-line transient suppression applications including onboard transceivers, DSL modems, IC buffers, and USB interface cards.

The working principle of the MSMLG14AE3 is rather straightforward. When a transient voltage is applied to one end of the circuit, a signal is propagated through the device that triggers the Zener diode pairs. Operating as a clamp, the diodes limit the voltage to a predefined level, thereby diverting the transient away from the target components. The diodes can also absorb part of the energy depending on the pulse period and amplitude. Once the transient is gone, the diodes remain in a low-current state, allowing only a miniscule amount of current to pass.

The MSMLG14AE3 can therefore provide improved protection for sensitive devices against transients such as ESD, EFT, burst impulses, and lightning pulses. Its low capacitance level is also adept at suppressing high-frequency signal transients. The device has a wide operating temperature range and can be used in commercial or industrial settings such as automotive, telecommunications, industrial control systems, and consumer electronics. Furthermore, this TVS-diode device employs a very low leakage current rate, ensuring that it does not drain power from the system.
