MSMLG22A is a type of TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) Diode. The diode has two main applications: one is to protect circuits from transient voltage surges (e.g. ESD, lightning, and power cross), and the other is to control overvoltage transients. The first application is used to provide protection against transient overvoltage events and their duration should be limited to protect the circuits, while the second application is used to provide a controlled output voltage during overvoltage transients. The working principle of MSMLG22A is based on the idea that when an inrush current or overvoltage transient occurs, this diodes will allow a high current to flow through it to reduce the magnitude of the transient. This happens when the diode breaks down and the voltage across the diode increases. This increased voltage will cause the current through the diode to increase, thereby reducing the voltage across the protected circuit. The current will then be limited by the diode’s reverse breakdown voltage and this current will continue until the transient passes.In order to provide effective protection, these diodes need to be selected properly. This involves choosing the right voltage rating, pulse current capability, surge current capability, and clamping voltage. The voltage rating should be chosen such that it is at least 20% higher than the normal operating voltage, and the pulse current capability should be dependent on the expected current rise rate, peak surge current, and duration of the event. For surge current capability, this should be chosen to be capable of absorbing 10 times the peak surge current that may occur. Finally, the clamping voltage should be chosen based on the expected overvoltage magnitude and the desired clamping voltage.Once the right voltage rating, pulse current capability, surge current capability, and clamping voltage is selected, the MSMLG22A can be mounted onto the target PCB. The diode can be connected directly into the line, and a standoff is generally recommended to provide a distance between the diode and the PCB. This diode should also be mounted in close proximity to the location of an inrush current or transient signal so that it can provide the best protection for the circuits.In summary, MSMLG22A is a type of TVS diode which is used to protect circuits from transient voltage surges and control output voltages during overvoltage transients.
