Once the surge voltage has been transferred to the diode, the device continues to absorb the energy as the voltage raises until it reaches its clamping voltage. Once the voltage exceeds the clamping voltage, the device begins to dissipate the energy as heat through its internal series resistor. The device will then reset itself back to its normally low impedance state and the signal line will be free from harm.
