The MSP-EXP430FR5994 device is an Evaluation Board designed to offer considerable benefits for the testing and development of different MCU, DSP, embedded and other applications. It offers a wide range of features and is relatively low cost compared to similar products on the market. The device provides a hardware platform that evaluates and demonstrates the features of Texas Instruments\' MSP430FR5xxx and Hercules™ safety microcontrollers and the Hercules™ microcontroller family and offers an on-board graphical user interface to provide easy access to the hardware and software functions.
As part of its embedded platform capabilities, the MSP-EXP430FR5994 features up to 64KB of non-volatile flash memory that supports program loading, program transfer, and serial-link communications and debugging. It also provides up to 48KB of SRAM, 4KB of which can be used for code cache. Additionally, it includes 128KB of onboard serial EEPROM with 16GB/sec data transfer rate for program storage and I/O control, as well as providing additional I/O interface options with up to 8 SPI, 8 UART, 4 I2C, 5 timers, 5 12-bit analog-to-digital converters, and more.
The board can be operated at low power with support for low-power sleep modes as well as wake-on-interrupt and wake-on-pin features. The board also supports an optional low-power mode that reduces power consumption by up to 40 percent when in idle or low-powered states. Its on-board I/O buffers make it suitable for high-power applications as well.
The board comes with comprehensive peripheral and debugging interfaces to facilitate the development of many applications, including stand-alone mini-applications, robotic systems, embedded systems, or any other type of device requiring control or data transfer. This includes support for up to 8 UART channels that enable reliable transfer of data at a maximum speed of 500 Kbaud and support for two 12-bit analog-to-digital converters.
In addition, the board features an integrated on-board debug interface that is designed to support both JTAG and SWD protocol interfaces. This allows both source-level and assembly-level debugging of code on a fully featured MSP430FR5xxx target device, providing visibility into the operation at each stage for debugging or troubleshooting of the system as needed.
The board supports a wide variety of operating systems, including real-time and embedded operating systems such as HEWOOD, MSP430-RTOS, Linux, and many others. Furthermore, it has been designed to provide compatibility with most development environments, including MPLAB X, IAR Embedded Workbench, and MSP-RSIM, as well as other ARM development tools.
The MSP-EXP430FR5994 provides an excellent platform for evaluating and proving out embedded system designs.
