The N-type layer has a high enough resistance to block the flow of electrons. When the desired voltage is reached, the N-type layer acts as a gate and allows electrons from the P-type layer to pass through, thus creating current.

The switching of the module is controlled by applying a current to the gate terminal, which increases the amount of electrons flowing from the P-type layer. This increases the length of time current is allowed to flow, resulting in either full-on or fully-off switching.
