The MSTC160-16 module is a thyristor-controlled power electronic device used to control the power flow in an electrical circuit. It is typically used in applications such as pulse power control, motor control, AC voltage control, DC/AC power conversion and other inverter applications. The device provides sixteen output channels, which are independently controllable and integrated into an integrated circuit (IC). The output channels can be individually configured for pulse width modulation (PWM) control, pulse density modulation (PDM), and other specialized switching controls.

The MSTC160-16 module employs an SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) as it’s switching element. SCRs are three-terminal devices which are used in applications requiring control of high power current with a low on-state voltage drop. The SCR consists of a single PN junction that is split into two regions. When the gate voltage is applied, a current can be passed through the SCR, allowing current to flow from anode to cathode. To turn off the current, the gate voltage is removed.

The MSTC160-16 module utilizes an SCR as the main switching element and uses an array of optically-isolated FETs (Field Effect Transistors) to drive the switching element. This combination of a traditional SCR and an optically-isolated FETS provides superior performance and safety, while reducing electromagnetic interference. The MSTC160-16 module also comes with integrated protection features such as short-circuit and overload protection, inrush current limiting, and overvoltage protection.

The MSTC160-16 module works by controlling the voltage across the SCR.
