MVS-1510 (35) is a multi-functional oceanographic measurement instrument. It uses flow probe technology to measure ocean and coastal current velocities. The instrument is designed for autonomous and continuous measurements of current velocity and direction in waters where the water depths are up to 10 meters. The primary applications for MVS-1510 (35) are mid-range (1,000-2,000 meters) and short-range (up to 200 meters).
The instrument’s design follows a three-part approach: the flow probe, the measurement unit and the communication module. The flow probe is a unique two-part structure that is attached to a stainless steel casing. It has a low-noise transducer that receives and processes data and a sheath-mounted impeller that measures the velocity and direction of the current. The impeller is designed to minimize drag and provide reliable measurements in a variety of environments. The measurement unit is housed in the instrument’s enclosure and has a 17-bit analog to digital converter and six digital inputs/outputs. It is responsible for controlling the flow probe, communicating with other devices, and storing and sending out data. The communication module is an insulated wire that connects the measurement unit to a host PC.
The MVS-1510 (35) measures the velocity of the water by calculating the Doppler shift of the sound wave sent by the transducer. The transducer sends a pulse of sound and then measures the return echo. The shift in the frequency of the echo is used to calculate the velocity. The impeller is used to measure the direction. It was designed to be as hydrodynamically efficient as possible, while providing reliable measurements in a variety of environments. The MVS-1510 (35) also has an embedded temperature sensor that measures the water temperature.
The data collected by the MVS-1510 (35) can be used to monitor currents, measure wave forms for navigation, measure water depth, monitor the health of aquatic habitats and measure direction and speed of water currents. The instrument can operate in either autonomous or continuous mode. The autonomous mode requires a power source and a connection to a computer for data collection and transmission. In continuous mode, the instrument will collect data on a continuous basis and transmit the data periodically to a remote location. The instrument is powered by a rechargeable battery and can be deployed for periods up to several days.
The MVS-1510 (35) is a versatile and reliable instrument for a variety of water monitoring applications. Its two-part design allows for quick deployment and retrieval in a variety of environments. The instrument is designed for autonomous and continuous measurements of current velocity and direction in waters where the water depths are up to 10 meters. It is an essential tool for oceanographers and other researchers studying the environment and its various characteristics.
