Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diodes, also known as Transient Voltage Protector (TVP) diodes, are a type of semiconductor device used as protection for electrical circuits in the event of voltage transients such as lightning strikes, short circuits, or overvoltage conditions. TVS Diodes are used to protect components from receiving voltages greater than their rated voltage. TVS Diodes can be used for both protection against overvoltage (protection against transient overvoltage) and protection against transient undervoltage (protection against voltage peaks). The TVS diode is a two-terminal device that is generally used in a uni-directional configuration. Under normal operating conditions it blocks high DC voltage, but in the event of a surge, or a transient overvoltage, it will conduct the current and absorb the energy of the surge and dissipate it as heat.The purpose of using a TVS diode is to protect another component from a higher voltage than it was designed for. Since the TVS diode can absorb the energy of a voltage surge, it can prevent other components in the circuit, such as transistors, resistors, capacitors, or other semiconductors, from being destroyed by the extra voltage.
