TVS diodes are widely used for protection against Electrical Overstress (EOS) conditions from lightning and voltage surges. The MX5KP24A is a highly reliable and cost-effective transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode from Diodes Incorporated. This low-capacitance TVS diode is designed for ESD and protect I/O pins from electrostatic discharge (ESD) and electrical fast transients (EFT), as defined by IEC 61000-4-2, Level 4. With a low dynamic capacitance of 2pF, the MX5KP24A is suitable for protection of high-speed digital and communication circuits.
The MX5KP24A has a low operating/standby power loss and high surge capability of 24A (8/20μs). It has an on-state clamping voltage of 23.7V typically and can be used in environments up to 70°C without additional cooling. With its low clamping voltage, this TVS diode is able to absorb a large amount of energy without compromising operation. Internally connected, the diode is ideally suited for bilateral overvoltage and level shifts.
The MX5KP24A provides a wide range of applications within communication systems where clamping voltage and capacitance are critical. Its low capacitance reduces propagating delay in high-speed signal lines such as HDMI and USB 3.0. It is ideal for automotive in-vehicle and manual equipment protection, HD HTV lines, and low-speed transmission lines. In addition to these, the device is designed to provide ultra-low capacitance designs for use in medium speed signal lines such as 10Gbps Ethernet and dual data rate (DDR) interfaces.
The working principle of the MX5KP24A is based on a simple rectification for over-voltage protection. The device utilizes an anode and a cathode to form a diode. When an electric field is applied to the diode, electrons are drawn towards the anode and the majority carriers flow through the diode. When the electric field reaches a certain level, the diode becomes forward biased and current will flow through it. The maximum peak current allowed by the diode is determined by its breakdown voltage.
The MX5KP24A also employs a Zener diode which is used to control the device\'s breakdown voltage. When the peak voltage exceeds the Zener voltage, the current flowing in the junction between the anode and the cathode is reduced by the diode\'s reverse breakdown, causing the device to enter a current-limited protection mode and clamp the voltage. The diode\'s dynamic behavior then enables the device to protect by diverting incoming impulses to ground.
