TVS - Diodes

MXLRT100KP130A is a Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diode. It is used to protect sensitive electronic components and systems from electrical over-stress caused by electrostatic discharges (ESD) and other transients. This type of diode bridges the gap between two other devices – the unidirectional diode and the Zener diode. It lies somewhere in the middle when it comes to clamping voltages and peak pulse current.

The MXLRT100KP130A is a glass passivated junction diode that features excellent clamping capabilities, low leakage current and low dynamic resistance. The device is guaranteed to provide peak pulse current of 100K Amperes (10/1000μs pulse width) at 130 Amperes peak pulse power dissipation. It has a working voltage range of 6.5 to 440 Volts and can provide over-voltage protection up to 600 Volts.

Working Principle of TVS Diodes

Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes work on the principle of avalanche breakdown of the p-n junction. When a high voltage is applied across the p-n junction of the diode, the electric field across the junction increases, resulting in an increase in current. This current is referred to as the avalanche current and it is enough to break down the junction and allow a low-resistance path for the current to flow through.

When the current flows through the diode, it immediately begins to dissipate the energy of the transient voltage. This is done by clamping the over-voltage to a safe level (the breakdown voltage of the diode), preventing any further increase in voltage. The amount of energy dissipated by the diode is directly proportional to the clamping voltage and the peak current passing through it. Once the transient voltage has been clamped, the diode is ready to handle the next voltage spike.

Applications of MXLRT100KP130A

The MXLRT100KP130A is mainly used to protect high-sensitive electronics from over-voltage. It can effectively absorb ESD from the environment and protect connected equipment from damage. MXLRT100KP130A can be used in a wide variety of applications, including:
