Transient Voltage Suppression Diode, more commonly referred to as TVS Diode, is a type of electrical component that acts to protect the circuit from high voltage spikes caused by an electrostatic discharge (ESD), a sudden voltage surge, or a load dump. In particular, the MXP5KE120CA is a unidirectional diode that can operate effectively on small signal lines with high speed and low clamping voltage.

Working Principle

The working principle of the MXP5KE120CA is based on the PN junction diode with an integrated avalanche effect, which allows current reversal when a high voltage pulse is applied. If the applied voltage exceeds the peak value of the breakdown voltage, an avalanche current forms and this causes a rapid increase in voltage, allowing the device to be exposed to high voltage spikes without deteriorating. The breakdown voltage is 5.6V with a triggering voltage of 4.2V.

The device is made up of two layers; the first layer is the PN Junction Diode, which conducts current in a single direction when biased correctly. The other layer is an avalanche layer, which has internal junctions that, when subjected to an avalanche voltage, generate high current in the reverse direction. This reverse current is then used to clamp the voltage on the device to a predictable level. By adjusting the breakdown voltage, the avalanche layer acts as a ‘safety valve’, limiting the minimum operating voltage of the device.

The MXP5KE120CA ensures that surges and ESD strikes are quickly absorbed and dissipated, preventing damage to the line and other components. This is accomplished with a very fast restore time that is significantly less than 10 picoseconds, ensuring that the line is able to withstand extremely high ESD levels, while still providing the protection necessary to maintain a high level of integrity.
